Caption On Reverse: "Crossing the Alleghenies ~ called by the Indians the 'Alligewi' ~ was, in earlier days, the insurmountable obstacle to commerce. This picture shows the present condition of the first railroad that succeeded in giving through service by boat and inclined plane. The stone ties shown still remain."

Description:  Here is an image of a cross section of an original iron rail from the Allegheny Portage Railroad (1834-1854). It has two engravings. The first of these reads: "Presented to William P. Smith, by J. King McLanahan." Mr. McLanahan was an industrialist who lived in Hollidaysburg during the early 1900's. Photo Caption: "Sectional boats carried on special cars passed through this first American railroad tunnel at Staple Bend near Johnstown, Pa. It was located at the top of an inclined plane on the [Allegheny] Portage Railroad, and was not far from the Pennsylvania Railroad's main line which supplanted it." Shown here is the West Portal of the Allegheny Portage Railroad's Staple Bend Tunnel. It has since been reopened and the walls reinforced; walk-through tours are now conducted by the National Park Service.

Description:  Muleshoe. Here is an undated postal card view of the "Skew Arch Bridge" above the New Portage Branch Line near Duncansville, Pennsylvania, that was issued during the 1940's. Front Caption: "Looking Down Cresson Grade Divided Highway at Old Portage Railroad Monument and Skew Arch Bridge on Route 22." Caption On Reverse: "The Monument commemorates the opening of the Old Portage Railroad on March 18, 1834. The Skew Arch Bridge carried this early railroad near the Allegheny Mountain summit, and is the only remaining one of its kind." Spanning Plane 6, it was part of the "Huntingdon, Cambria, and Indiana Turnpike" between Huntingdon and Blairsville.

Here is an undated postal card view of the "Old Portage Railroad Monument On The William Penn Highway" above the New Portage Branch Line near Duncansville, Pennsylvania, that was issued during the 1940's. Caption On Reverse: "The Allegheny Portage Railroad, opened in 1834, hauled the canal boats over the mountains between the Juniata and Conemaugh Rivers. The monument is built from stone ties taken from the old roadbed."

Description:  Here is an original photo that I took at "The Diamond" in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, in December of 1964. Shown here is the Daughters of the American Revolution's historical plaque recounting some local history. It neglects to mention that Hollidaysburg was once the western terminus of the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal/eastern terminus of the Allegheny Portage Railroad (1834-1854), and later played an important role in the development and sustainment of the Pennsylvania Railroad.
